BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The U.S. Naval Academy’s rowing team is spending the week in Brevard County as part of its winter training camp, using the Cape Canaveral Barge Canal in Merritt Island to prepare for the upcoming spring season.

The Midshipmen arrived Sunday with a group of about 35 to 40 athletes and staff and are scheduled to depart Friday.

Coaches said the straight, calm waters of the canal provide ideal conditions for rowing, while the warm weather offers a welcome break from winter training in Annapolis, Maryland.

Space Coast Sports Commission Executive Director Terry Parks said hosting teams like the Naval Academy highlights Brevard County’s growing reputation as a spring training destination for collegiate sports, including rowing, baseball, softball, and lacrosse.

Parks noted the visits generate significant economic impact through lodging, dining, and local services, and many teams return multiple times a year.

Naval Academy rowing coach Matt Flohr, in his first season with the program, said the trip serves as a kickoff to the championship season, which begins in March and runs through early June.

He added that the location’s convenience and on-site accommodations make Brevard County an attractive option for future training camps.

Local businesses are also seeing the benefits. Dolphins Waterfront Bar and Grill and the adjacent Cape Crossing Resort and Marina are hosting the team, providing lodging, meals, and direct access to the water.

Owners said visiting rowing teams boost tourism and support the local economy during the winter months.

Officials with the Space Coast Sports Commission said they will continue promoting Brevard County’s natural assets and facilities to attract additional collegiate and national-level sports teams.
