The National Park Service is seeking volunteers to join its Apollo District Sea Turtle Watch Scouts program for the 2026 nesting season at Canaveral National Seashore.

The program offers community members a unique opportunity to play an active role in protecting Florida’s coastal wildlife while experiencing the shoreline’s natural beauty after dark.

Volunteers will assist park staff in monitoring nesting activity, supporting conservation efforts, and helping educate the public about sea turtles.

Sea Turtle Scouts are responsible for patrolling beaches on foot during evening hours, spotting and reporting nesting Loggerhead sea turtles, protecting active nests, and assisting with ranger-led Turtle Walk programs.

These efforts are critical during peak nesting season, when human awareness and conservation practices help ensure the safety of both turtles and their habitats.

Volunteer shifts are scheduled primarily in June and July, typically running from 7 p.m. to midnight, with occasional later nights depending on nesting activity. Participants should be prepared for warm weather, sandy terrain, and extended periods of walking along the beach.

Ideal candidates are those who have a passion for conservation, can comfortably navigate outdoor environments at night, and are able to follow safety guidelines while working as part of a team.

Volunteers must also complete required training prior to participating and may use their personal vehicles for transportation.

Officials note that Sea Turtle Scouts also serve as representatives of the National Park Service, engaging with visitors and helping to share the importance of protecting nesting sea turtles along Florida’s coast.

The program provides a meaningful way for residents and visitors alike to contribute to conservation efforts while experiencing the Space Coast’s unique nighttime coastal environment.

Those interested in joining the program can contact Avia Woulard at Avia_Woulard@nps.gov or by phone at 386-428-3384 for more information.
