OBITUARY: Beloved Navy Wife and Indian River Colony Club in Viera Resident Mary Chasse Passes Away at 98

After a career of military service, Mary and Robert moved to the Indian River Colony Club in Viera in 1997

Mary E. Chasse, age 98, a longtime resident of Indian River Colony Club in Viera and native of Walpole, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026. Following Captain Robert L. Chasse’s retirement from the United States Navy in 1985, the couple settled in northern Virginia for 12 years before making their permanent home at Indian River Colony Club in Viera in 1997.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Mary E. Chasse, age 98, a longtime resident of Indian River Colony Club in Viera and native of Walpole, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026.

Born the first child of Thomas Barry and Ruth Barry, Mary graduated from Walpole High School in 1946 and went on to attend Dresser Business College in Keene, New Hampshire, graduating in 1949.

She began her professional career with the Dartmouth College Sports Publicity Department in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she met her future husband, LTJG Robert L. Chasse, USN.

Mary and Robert were married in 1955 and shared a life defined by service, dedication, and family.

As a Navy wife throughout Bob’s distinguished 33-year career, Mary became the cornerstone of her family, expertly managing and organizing 26 moves across the country, including an overseas assignment in Guam.

Alongside these transitions, she devoted herself to raising their four children.

Her children include Marie, born in 1956 in Hanover, New Hampshire; David, born in 1958 in Norfolk, Virginia; Richard, born in 1960 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine; and Robert T., born in 1961 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Following Captain Robert L. Chasse’s retirement from the United States Navy in 1985, the couple settled in northern Virginia for 12 years before making their permanent home at Indian River Colony Club in Viera in 1997.

Mary was an active and proud member of several organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, Abigail Stearns Chapter 853, an Associate Life Member of the Snug Harbor Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., and an auxiliary member of American Legion Post 145 in Frenchville, Maine.

She is survived by her four children, who reside in California, Texas, Virginia, and Maryland, as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Sheila Vaillencourt of Walpole, New Hampshire.

Catholic funeral services and burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be announced.
