BCSO Remembers Deputy Ray Warner on 30th Anniversary of End of Watch

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is honoring the memory of Deputy Ray Warner, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on June 13, 1996.

Deputy Warner was shot and killed when he and another deputy responded to a burglary at Merritt Island High School at 12:15 am.

The suspect had hidden under a table in a back office and attacked Deputy Warner from behind when he entered the school’s office.

During the struggle, the suspect was able to gain control of Deputy Warner’s service weapon and shot him seven times.

The other deputy was shot in the knee but was able to return fire, killing the suspect. The suspect, who was on probation, had pleaded guilty to three previous break-ins at schools in the area and was waiting for sentencing.

Deputy Warner had served with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. He was survived by a son and daughter.

As part of its ongoing “Remembering Our Fallen” tribute series, the agency reflected on Warner’s service and dedication to protecting the citizens of Brevard County.

His End of Watch occurred 30 years ago, but his legacy continues to be remembered by fellow deputies, family members, friends and the community he served.

 The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office regularly honors its fallen heroes to ensure their commitment, courage and service are never forgotten.

Deputy Warner’s name remains a permanent part of the Sheriff’s Office history and serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day while protecting their communities.
