Melbourne Municipal Band Celebrates the Music of America

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Arguably, no other musical group is as American as the municipal band.

As the official band of the City of Melbourne for more than six decades, Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB) is as American as apple pie, and the band will prove it with “Songs for America,” a pair of concerts that celebrates the rich heritage of our country’s music, from Stephen Foster melodies and John Phillip Sousa marches to American jazz standards and Irving Berlin show tunes.

The concerts, which begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, June 24 and 25, have an added benefit any red, white, and blue-blooded citizen appreciates: they are free.

Both concerts take place at the band’s home venue, Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne.

The program includes Irving Berlin’s Songs for America, Aaron Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody(from Appalachian Spring), Stars and Stripes Forever, by John Philip Sousa, music from the John Williams/Paul Lavender score for the film “Lincoln,” and the iconic Samuel Ward/Carmen Dragon arrangement for America, the Beautiful, among others.

“We want to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in style!” said Conductor Staci Rosbury.

To make it a dinner-and-a-show experience, the auditorium’s concessionaire, City Bistro, is preparing an All-American dinner of all-beef hot dogs, chips, baked beans, lemonade, and apple pie at 6 p.m., as the Sunshine Brass Quintet provides pre-show entertainment.

Since 1965, MMB has consistently entertained Brevard audiences with free concerts of some of the best music in the world.

MMB additionally offers dances and a variety of ensemble performances at venues throughout the county.

The band also nurtures the next generation of musicians through a free summer youth band program and performance opportunities.

Conductor Staci Rosbury, currently in her 15th season as MMB conductor, has also performed as a flute player, board member, and associate conductor of the organization.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in music education and a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida.

She studied conducting with Dr. David A. Waybright at the University of Florida’s School of Music and attended conducting master classes with Col. John R. Bourgeois, former conductor of the United States Marine Band, and with Jerry Junkin (University of Texas at Austin), Kevin Sedatole (Michigan State University), Jamie Nix (Columbus State University), Richard Floyd (University of Texas at Austin) and Gary Hill (University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music).

After serving as the Director of Admissions and Undergraduate Advising for the School of Music at UF, she taught band and general music in the Florida Public Schools and became increasingly involved in the community music and theater scene in Central Florida.

Now in its 61st season, the Melbourne Municipal Band provides free, high-quality concerts to the community and nurtures the next generation of musicians through youth education and performance initiatives.

Rosbury has been the music director for shows at the Henegar Center and has played flute with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Central Florida Winds & Chamber Winds, Space Coast Flute Orchestra, and MMB.

She is currently the Administrator for the Indian River Symphonic Association, which hosts a concert series of national and international orchestras each year in Vero Beach.

She is also on the board of the Association of Concert Bands, a national organization whose mission is to foster excellence in concert band music through performance, education, and advocacy.

“I am really excited about the patriotic program we have in store for our audience this year, Rosbury said. “It’s going to be a concert to remember!”
