BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of low pressure in the central tropical Atlantic that will likely develop into a tropical depression during the latter half of the week.
As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the system was located approximately 500 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with the disturbance remained limited.
However, forecasters expect environmental conditions to become more favorable for development during the next couple of days.
The system is forecast to move westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic as it gradually becomes better organized.
The National Hurricane Center gives the disturbance a 30 percent chance of formation during the next 48 hours and a high 70 percent chance during the next seven days.
The system remains far from the United States, and it is too early to determine whether it will eventually affect any land areas.
