Merritt Island retains top spot after huge 35-7 victory over Melbourne
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As it looked like Week 2’s slate of games was going to be fun and highly competitive, it was primarily blowouts. Several teams made statements, while others were left scratching their heads. The most hyped up game thus far was Merritt Island and Melbourne, which did not turn out as close of a contest as most would have thought.

No. 1 – Merritt Island Mustangs (2-0)
After dismantling Cocoa week 1 the Mustangs focused their attention on the Bulldogs. Some might even say that their performance against Melbourne looked more complete than against Cocoa. Now ranked inside the top 20 in the state, according to MaxPreps, Merritt Island will try to keep their hot start going this Friday.

No. 2 – Eau Gallie Commodores (1-1)
Eau Gallie did not surprise many with the way they performed last Friday, beating Heritage 41-0. This is the way that most expected the Commodores team to look this season, and they will be tested again on Friday as they travel over to Orlando to face Seminole.

No. 3 – Titusville Terriers (2-0)
The ascendancy of this Terriers team is probably a shocker to some, but not me. A season ago, the Terriers were on the doorstep in many games and could have easily been an 8- or 9-win team. With Remy Vigne coming over from Cocoa Beach, he has led the offense very well so far.
Next game: September 4, vs Spruce Creek
No. 4 – Melbourne Bulldogs (1-1)
Regardless of whether starting quarterback CJ Hall was playing in this game or not, it was going to be a tall task to take down the Merritt Island Mustangs. The Bulldogs are still in a really good spot, and when healthy, can compete with anyone in the county; this should be a good bounce-back week for them.
Next game: September 4, vs Winter Springs
No. 5 – Viera Hawks (2-0)
This Viera team still has a chip on their shoulder as they have not met the expectations that they once had. However, they are slowly starting to find their footing and become one of the best teams in the county again. If Viera can stay healthy watch out for the Hawks come the end of the season.
Next game: September 4, vs Heritage
No. 6 – Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers’ (2-0)
The Hustlers have looked like a Ryan Schneider-coached team over the first couple of weeks, and that is why they are undefeated thus far. However, their first true test will come this Friday on the road at Bishop Moore. If they are still without their main playmaker, Noah Flores, that could be a difficult hill to overcome, but the Hustlers are looking to make a statement.

No. 7 – Cocoa Tigers (0-1)
The Tigers’ bout with Fort Pierce Central was canceled due to weather, and honestly, that might be in the Tigers’ favor. Cocoa needs some time to build continuity and find their rhythm; if the young players can lift the load in some of their difficult games, that will go a long way come the end of the season.

No. 8 – Satellite Scorpions (3-0)
