BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Cocoa Police Department has exceeded all the requirements to become an Excelsior agency under the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.

The prestigious recognition, signifies the department’s consistent adherence to the highest standards of excellence, having been accredited at least five times without any stipulations.

Achieving Excelsior status is the pinnacle of accomplishment in Florida accreditation for a criminal justice agency.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the men and women of this agency,” said Cocoa Mayor Michael C. Blake.

“This achievement is the culmination of 18 years of hard work and perseverance. It’s a testament to the agency’s unwavering commitment to excellence, positioning us as a premier law enforcement agency not only in our state but in the nation as a whole.”

In April, a team of assessors spent three days reviewing the department’s files, policies, procedures, documentation, and compliance with CFA standards. The team interviewed personnel, and reviewed equipment, training, and all the criteria needed to prove adherence to more than 200 professional standards.

These standards govern everything from storing equipment and evidence, to the use of force, record keeping, training, and everything in between.

“Throughout the assessment process, it was obvious to the assessment team that Cocoa Police Department is a dedicated, professional agency, embracing accreditation as the ‘way of doing business,” said Team Leader Jacqueline Wolfe.

“Chief Collier and his staff are committed to preparing the next generation of law enforcement through leading by example, holding one another accountable, and praising the success of each member.”

All assessors noted the professionalism, compassion, enthusiasm, teamwork, and quality of service provided by the Cocoa Police Department and unanimously recommended reaccreditation with Excelsior status. The Commission presented the certificate to Chief Collier and his team in Orlando on June 20.
