BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – West Melbourne Police Department officials issued a warning that officers are increasingly encountering electric dirt bikes, known as e-motos, and emphasized that these vehicles are not the same as e-bikes.

Under Florida law, these vehicles are not street legal. Most of these electric dirt bikes do not have pedals, have multi-thousand-watt motors (Over 750 Watts), and are designed strictly for off-road use.

It is illegal to operate electric dirt bikes on public roadways, bike lanes, and sidewalks.

Operating an unregistered electric dirt bike on a public road is a criminal offense and can result in significant fines, vehicle impoundment, and a mandatory court appearance.

West Melbourne police officials said parents and guardians are legally responsible for ensuring these vehicles are used appropriately. Allowing a child to ride an electric dirt bike on public streets or sidewalks can expose both the rider and others to serious safety risks and legal consequences.

Electric dirt bikes are intended only for private property, with the owner’s permission, and designated off-road trails, which the City of West Melbourne does not have.

“WMPD’s goal is education and safety, not enforcement after the fact,” said a spokesperson. “Please take a moment to verify that any motorized vehicle your child rides is legal for where it’s being operated.”

If you have questions about what is street legal, contact the West Melbourne Police Department before riding.
